Schooled In Style

I spent nine hours at Smashbox Studios this weekend with celebrity wardrobe stylist, Luke Storey, learning the what and what not to do's of making it in the fashion industry. What I learned in nine hours would've have taken years figuring out on my own. Luke created the School of Style which is the first and only school in Los Angeles specializing specifically in wardrobe styling. He literally teaches you everything from A to Z, but does it in an entertaining way...not to mention he's got a great sense of humor! Plan to laugh a lot while being told exactly how it is in the business...there's no sugar-coating.

Me with Luke...Still standing after 9 hours!

Storey has over ten years of experience and has styled for Kanye West, Marilyn Manson, and No Doubt among others. It was nine hours well spent and I highly recommend the School of Style to anyone interested in wardrobe styling in any capacity.

For more information about Luke visit his website, School of Style or his agency's, PhotoGenics.

The Story of Coco Chanel

Want high fashion without emptying your wallet this weekend? If you live in New York or Los Angeles you're in luck. The fashionable movie, Coco Before Chanel opens this Friday, September 25th and will be opening in other cities soon.

Follow the life of Coco Chanel, from headstrong orphan to the woman who single-handedly changed the world of fashion. I love Coco, love how she stuck to her beliefs and in the end helped create couture as we know it today.

Check your local theaters for showtimes.

Headpieces that Make a Statement

I was first introduced to these fabulous headpieces by my amazing hair stylist, Jen Atkin, the last time I was at the salon. It was LOVE at first sight.

Jennifer Behr is the talented creator behind these beautiful custom headpieces. She honed her skills as hair accessory designer for celebrity hair stylist Frederic Fekkai. When Fekkai discountinued the accessory line, Behr decided it was time to go off on her own. Bergdorf Goodman bought her first collection sight unseen. As they say, the rest is history...a shiny one with any of these headpieces!

Here is a sampling of the current collection. To see more, visit Jennifer Behr's website.

Street Style in Your Closet

Yes, I'm one of those that easily gets side-tracked when it comes to working. Between emails and all of the fun fashion sites online, it's easy to lose track of time. I've been having fun checking out street-style fashion sites lately and came across this one that has captured my attention.

Weardrobe is a new community fashion website that allows its members to upload photos and catalog all of their fabulous clothes creating an "online" closet. Need a little inspiration, check out what other members are wearing while making new fashion besties!

They also keep it interesting by offering weekly contests where members can win some good loot. Careful, it's a site that easily becomes addictive and before you know it that report you had to get out is still waiting to be completed. At least you'll have the next day's fabulous outfit already planned.

It's not what you wear but how you wear it!

Top 10 Wardrobe Basics Every Closet Should Have

We’ve all heard the statistic that women only wear 20% of the clothing in their closets on a daily basis. Many fall into this statistic. If one has a good “basic” wardrobe to begin with the possibilities are endless. Here is a list of the most useful items for any closet.

Little Black Dress

Coco Chanel made it famous. This is the one piece of clothing that will never go out of style. If you’re looking to channel Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn invest in a classic sleeveless shift dress. It can easily be dressed up with stilettos and a bit of sparkles or throw a lightweight cardigan and flats on for a more casual look. Whether it’s a mini, fitted or maxi-dress a LBD is an essential wardrobe piece. Make sure to keep it simple and have your accessories be your embellishments.

Pencil Skirt

There is nothing more classic than a pencil skirt. It’s one of the best classic wardrobe pieces, as it can easily be transformed. For fall add a belted cardigan sweater with bold-colored tights and ankle boots for a fashionable office look. There are some amazing pencil skirts this season in prints as well as solid colors.

T-Shirts

A wardrobe is not complete without t-shirts. This is one area where stocking up on inexpensive brands is perfectly acceptable. T-shirts should only last one season as white tends to turn yellow after too many washes and dark colors fade after too many run-ins with the dryer. They are great layering pieces that work with jeans and a blazer to a pencil skirt and heels.

Blazer

This season it’s all about blazers. Bold shoulders, boyfriend, military-inspired and tailored blazers means there’s one for every occasion. A blazer can instantly toughen or add class to your outfit thereby offering you more looks to create with your wardrobe.

5. Amazing Shoes

Shoes should be one area in your closet that you allot a little more money to. They can instantly take your outfit from drab to fabulous. Every woman should own a nude pump, a classic black patent leather pump and an embellished flat. As far as I’m concerned there’s no need to stop there, the sky’s the limit as far as how many shoes are enough. A good pair of shoes can last forever, especially if you have a good cobbler on speed dial!

Classic Handbags

Spend with confidence on a classic, exceptionally made bag from such designers as Prada, YSL, Chanel, Louis Vuitton or any other high-end designer. Stay away from trendy hardware or patterns opting to stick instead with solid colors. A well made bag will be yours forever…and you can always use the rational that one day it’ll be vintage to help ease the anxiety when handing over your credit card!

Jeans

Where would we be without jeans? They have become a classic in everyone’s wardrobe. There is a fit and wash for every occasion and then some. Choose a pair that fit your body and make you feel amazing. If you are just starting out, choose a dark wash as it gives the illusion of being slimmer and also has a more polished look thereby expanding your closet.

Cashmere Sweater

Cashmere is something you can wear all year long. While good cashmere can be pricy, it’s worth the splurge in the long run. It will last a lifetime with proper care as it won’t thin or lose it’s shape.

Scarves

SA Always a bit jealous of French women and wonder how they get their amazing style? Well steal one of their staples and incorporate a scarf into your wardrobe. A scarf is so versatile and there are so many options available. They are not just for winter. Throw one over a maxi dress as you hit the farmer’s market on the weekend. Splurge on a large printed silk scarf from Hermes and the possibilities are endless.

10. Classic Trench Coat

The classic trench coat is a staple wardrobe item that never goes out of style. It exudes timeless class while protecting one from the elements. Whether one goes practical or trendy, long or short, a trench is a flattering option for every body type. One can pair with a suit for work or jeans for the weekend, a trench coat is a piece one will keep coming back to year after year.

How to Transition Your Summer Wardrobe to Fall

Red Sole darlings, I'm introducing you to a new guest writer today, Dulcet Style...enjoy! I'm off to enjoy Fashion Night's Out and will be back tomorrow. Ta-ta!

It's hard to think fall when the temperature is still so warm outside! So just how do you change your look for the upcoming season and still keep cool when it is so warm? The easiest way to achieve this is with accessories. Think rich colored scarves, groovy necklaces and great shoes to create a transitional look. That favorite summer sweater or tee will instantly look updated with a great scarf in one of falls new colors. You can also use that same scarf in your hair to add some fall color or as a belt to again create a new look with your summer wardrobe.

We are both excited that necklaces are still on the fashion radar for fall. Look for multi-strand necklaces in metals that compliment your skin tone. Other necklaces to try would be ombre beaded necklaces, pendants of large stones, and large beaded necklaces also create interest and help to bring in color. Just remember to keep it long this season and full of interest.

Start shopping for your fall shoes early so you can be sure to get your size. We are seeing a lot of great shoes for fall including one of our favorites, the peep-toe shoe boot. This is a shoe that can be worn with tights to update summer skirts and dresses, and we love that same look with capri's. Just make sure the material is not too summery and light like linen.

This is also a good time to start purchasing your fall make-up. Pick a new color to try on your eyes like teal or gold. Paint your toe nails a fall shade like purple which is everywhere now. Choose a shade that is rich and dark, not to blue. Toss out that lip gloss and replace it with a creamy lipstick for a "now" look.

These simple tips will help you get that extra few weeks of warm weather wear from your current wardrobe and get you warmed up for fall shopping at the same time.

It's Bananas

Rachel Zoe, the trendsetting stylist to the stars, is launching her own moderately priced accessory line this fall with QVC. Expect lots of shiny baubles, handbags, sunglasses and faux-fur outerwear priced from $30 to $150. Mimic the looks of some of her A-list celebrity clients such as Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson and Jennifer Garner with her budget conscious line. I know I'm excited to see how her obsession with the 60's and 70's will translate through her collection. Zoe is set to unveil her collection live at New York's Fashion Week with QVC. I'm sure the consciences will be...well, "I die!"

Fall Must Haves

Just wanted to thank the SITs girls for featuring me today. Welcome to all of those who are new to my site. Hope you enjoy.

Must Have List for Fall 2009

Nothing like the changing seasons to get excited about updating your closet. Below are a few of my must haves for the upcoming fall season to help inspire you until the September issues hit your mailbox!

Leopard Print Blouse

Animal prints are everywhere this season, but they’ve managed to live in my closest for some time now. I’ve never met an animal print I didn’t like. I love this blouse because it has just enough sass but when paired with jeans or a pencil skirt it won’t make you look like you’re channeling Catwoman.

D&G Leopard Print Blouse, $415

Rational Buy

Black Blazer

There are many versions to the blazer this season. But there’s one that really has my eye…a fitted blazer rocking exaggerated shoulders. It has my name written all over it. Throw it over a delicate floral print dress to add a little edge to your outfit.

D&G Peak Lapel Blazer, $695

Rational Buy

Sequin Skirt

Looking to liven up your wardrobe…just add sequins. There’s no need to be afraid of looking like a disco ball if done properly. Pair with opaque black stockings, flat boots, white tissue t-shirt and a fitted jean jacket and you’ll have mastered the casual-modern look.

Haute Hippie Mini Skirt, $295

Rational Buy

Over-the-Knee Boots

As soon as I saw these at Barney’s a few months ago it was love at first sight. There are so many ways to wear them, where to start? Throw on with leggings and an over-sized sweater that’s belted at the waist and you’re all set for Saturday brunch. You’re sure to be the one everyone is checking out wishing they could have your style.

Chloe Over the Knee Boot, $1,195

Rational Buy

Red Bag

Red…it’s not just for Valentine’s Day this year. It’s the easiest way to add some spice to your closet. I love this bag from Balenciaga. Not only is it the perfect color, but it has a bit of hardware to give it a touch of roughness.

Balenciaga Work Handbag, $1595

Rational Buy

Rodarte on Target this Holiday Season

Looks like it's going to be a good Christmas this year. Rodarte, the darlings of the fashion industry, unveiled their 55-piece Target collaboration in a preview to editors yesterday. Lacy slip dresses, denim jackets, tulle skirts and a killer black dress are what we have to look forward to this holiday season from the collaboration. Hitting stores December 20th, the collection will retail for under $80...yep, you read correctly.

When asked to describe the collection for WWD, Joshua Thomas, a Target spokesman said, “It’s very feminine, yet very modern. The collection incorporates a rich mix of patterns and fabrications and everything from sequins and bows to faux fur. The key with Rodarte is layering.”

It may be a stretch trying to imagine translating the hand-wrought designs of Rodarte into mass market designs, but if anyone is up to the challenge Target has found its match.

First it was Jimmy Choo, who announced their collaboration with H&M and now Rodarte?  Here's to a happy holiday season.

Seeing Red

You have a bold personality, and this season's color has your name written all over it. Red is the hot trend for the 2009 Fall Season.  It's sure to add the perfect amount of spice to your wardrobe, not that you necessarily need any help in that arena!

Lust
Looking to channel your inner Jackie this season? Well Gucci has taken the guess work out for you and has updated one of their classic handbags. Pair with a simple grey sheath dress and hot pair of leopard heels and you are ready to go. Somewhere Jackie would be smiling down!
Tory Burch is known for blending timeless and classic designs with a modern twist. While her collection can be found on the set of Gossip Girls and socialites alike, she makes the perfect understated wardrobe for everyday moms. Looking to add some "red" spice to your wardrobe without seeing red in your bank account? The new "Utility" bag in Tory Burch's collection is your answer.
